Brewers End Welcome to the Takeley Local History Society website!

Our village is estimated to be over 5,000 years old. it has bronze-age, iron-age, Roman and even Neolithic roots.

Takeley is a village of some 1,000 homes in the county of Essex (England). Despite being surrounded by countryside we are only 31 miles north of London and have Stansted (London's third airport) within our parish boundary.

Takeley Local History Society was formed in June 1998 as a result of overwhelming interest shown during a village appraisal into what the parishioners wanted for the new millennium.

The Society currently has a growing membership upwards of 60 and is open to all with an interest in the history of the parish of Takeley.

Membership is currently £7 per annum and at least 4 meetings a year are held at which talks are given and members can share their interests.

Members are encouraged to follow an area of study and then present it in whatever form is appropriate. This can vary from short talks to sharing old photographs to producing documents and reports which can be archived for the future. Where possible, archive material is copied into computer readable form to help ensure it is not lost in the future.

With an eye to the history of tomorrow, members are also encouraged to photograph their surroundings which are changing so rapidly as part of the development of Stansted airport.

We hope you enjoy this website and that it gives you a taste of the village that is Takeley.
